Fly Fishing Hot Spots In Australia
By Bob Ives
Looking for some great fly fishing spots in Australia for trout is
like looking for a hot dog in a ball park; all you have to do is head
most any direction and you’ll find one. To be fair, when it comes to
Australian fly fishing most of it is done along the eastern territory,
but there are great fishing spots that run from the north to the south
that include rivers, streams with Rainbow trout and lakes full of Brown
trout.
Fly Fishing In Tasmania
Oh yeah, this is one sweet spot. Tasmania is a little island state in
southeastern Australia and it has some rugged country and great fly
fishing. When you fish in Tasmania you will be fishing lakes, streams,
rivers, lagoons, backwaters and tributaries. The environment ranges from
gentle to rugged and the fishing ranges from boat fishing to wade
fishing. Many of the trips involve hiking into unspoiled territory which
contain lakes holding very large Browns. We’re talking trophy sized
trout here.

Fly Fishing In Victoria
Moving a little further north you can find more great fly fishing in
Victoria. What makes Victoria so great is the amount of trout stocked
waters. There are many mountain streams and rivers in the high country
of Victoria, and it is home to Pretty Valley Reservoir and Rocky Valley
Reservoir; two great fly fishing lakes.
Another good fly fishing for large trout is Lake Bullen Merri, which is
too deep for wade fishing but excellent for walk around fly fishing.
There are plenty of good trout streams near Melbourne also containing
Browns and Rainbows.
Fly Fishing In The Snowy Mountains
Those who live there and have lodges there would swear to you that
the absolute best fly fishing in Australia is in the Snowy Mountains,
particularly for trout. The Snowy Mountains are found in NSW and this is
another hot spot full of lakes, streams, rivers and tributaries. This is
considered the ‘high country’ and is home to the Alpine lakes. Also in
the area is the Monaro river region of lakes and streams, also
considered to be one of the absolute ‘must go’ places for fly fishing
for trout. In addition to the Snowy Mountains, there are numerous other
fly fishing spots in the NSW (New South Wales).
Actually, one could write an entire book about where to go fly
fishing for trout in Australia. And another could spend a whole lifetime
going to and learning to fish those spots. If you’re planning a trip
there, your best bet is to make it simple. Hire one of the many fly
fishing guides to show you around so you can make the most out of your
time there. In fact, why not take an extended trip and spend a little in
northeastern, middle and southeastern Australia fly fishing for trout?
Who knows … you might never want to return home. |
